Martin “Marty” Cooper (born 26 December 1928) is an American engineer. It is a leader in the wireless communications industry, especially in radio spectrum management, with eleven patents in the field. Cooper invented the first handheld cellular mobile phone in 1977 and led the team that developed and marketed it in 1983. They are considered “parents”.

After Gugililmo Marconi’s first communications in 1955, Cooper found that the ability to transmit different radio communications at the same time and in the same place increased equally. Cooper inspired the enactment of the Spectral Efficiency Act, known as the Cooper Law.
